Versus To Air More Mixed Martial Arts

Networks don't appear to be losing their appetite for mixed martial arts. The Versus network will kick up another go-round of the World Combat League, founded by action hero Chuck Norris.

The mixed martial arts field has enough popularity that even a lesser-known competition like the WCL out-rated the National Hockey League on Versus, the WCL said. The WCL uses a team format.

"There is a hunger out there for team mixed-martial arts that put skill and athleticism ahead of hype and brutality," Norris said. The World Combat League returns this fall with three new teams and an expanded bout schedule.

Versus will offer the new season in 20 one-hour shows, each with some 10 to 12 fights. Bouts are limited to three minutes each, so every show is guaranteed 10-12 fights. Under the WCL's format, each six-member team includes one female.

The 2007-08 WCL season begins Oct. 20 at Denver's Broomfield Event Center, featuring the league's four Western Conference squads.
