Hewitt to Receive TV Award

  • January 21, 2003
The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists will give the first AFTRA Lifetime Achievement Award to 60 Minutes creator Don Hewitt. The awards dinner will be held May 12 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. The event will also honor the correspondents of CBS Network's 60 Minutes, each of whom will receive an AFTRA Award of Excellence in Broadcasting. Additional honorees for the AFTRA Excellence in Sound Recording and the AFTRA Excellence in Entertainment Awards will be announced in the next few weeks, as well as other luminaries associated with the event. The AFTRA/Heller Memorial Foundation is named for George Heller, a key founder of AFRA and one of the creators of the AFTRA Pension and Welfare Funds (now known as the Health & Retirement Funds), the first in the largely freelance entertainment industry. The Memorial Foundation provides scholarships to AFTRA members and their families for academic excellence and financial need to a university, professional school or other accredited instituted of higher learning. These grants are offered for academic study in any field, including broadcast journalism and labor relations, or for professional training in the performing arts. The AFTRA Foundation administers the scholarships and also provides funds for other programming and research of value to the performer, journalist and artist members of the union.
