No Happy Birthday Notices On Facebook?

This is very interesting. There is another issue that you don't raise in the article, and that is whether or not sites like Facebook can/should protect user information from people/organizations that may have bad intentions (e.g. identity thieves).

Since so many users post their real birthdates (a valuable piece of information for identity thieves), there may be a good reason for Facebook and other social networking sites to block software from gathering that type of information about their users. I completely agree that there is an ownership of data issue. But I think the other debate should be about what information is safe for people to supply on these sites, and what these sites should do to protect their users.
