Belo, AP Boost Local News Video

In a sign of the growing importance of local video to online news sites, Belo and the Associated Press announced they had struck separate deals to share online video from local sites.

Belo Corporation signed a deal with Yahoo Inc. that will bring local news video from 13 of its television stations to the online search and content portal. The Belo stations providing content are located in large to mid-size markets: Houston, San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans, Phoenix, St. Louis, Seattle, Spokane, Portland, Tucson, Charlotte, Louisville, Kentucky, and Hampton/Norfolk, Virginia.

The video content will be made available on Yahoo's local news pages, meaning that Yahoo now has local news video deals in 18 out of the top 25 markets in the country.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the companies said they will share advertising revenue. The agreement was reached within the terms of a broader content partnership between the two companies, as part of Yahoo's newspaper consortium.

Also, the Associated Press struck a deal with local Web sites that subscribe to its Online Video Network, allowing them to upload and distribute their own video using AP's proprietary player. Opening up the online technology--previously used solely to distribute AP's content--will make it easier for local sites to monetize their television news content online. The player now also permits the local sites to insert local advertising online.
