Golf Promo Wins Bronze Lion Award at Cannes

  • July 3, 2003
CBS Sports' new golf promo, "Drive Through," was awarded the prestigious Bronze Lion award at the Cannes 50th International Advertising Festival held June 15-21 in France. Billed as the Oscars of the advertising world, this festival is the largest gathering of worldwide marketing and advertising professionals. CBS Sports introduced a new golf promotional campaign, CBS Sports: The Voice of Golf, in March, which airs through multiple dayparts on CBS TV. The campaign features CBS Sports' golf announce team members -- Jim Nantz, Lanny Wadkins, David Feherty, Gary McCord, Peter Oosterhuis, Bobby Clampett, Peter Kostis and Bill Macatee - appearing in several promos of various lengths.

Award Winning "Drive Through," featuring CBS Sports golf anchor Jim Nantz driving a truck full of his on-air teammates into a fast food restaurant. Ordering for the group in his announcer whisper, Nantz exasperates the young employee who can't hear him and asks him several times to speak up. The other guys remind Nantz not to forget things like pickles and apple pie. "Bedtime," featuring Feherty in his bedroom wearing Phil Mickelson pajamas. In fact, Mickelson's head is everywhere: on his toothbrush and cup, a life-size cut out, bobblehead and golf balls. Feherty says a prayer for "Phil to win his first major" and then climbs into bed under a Mickelson quilt and then picks up a Mickelson doll to cuddle with before turning out the light. The tag is "CBS Sports, We're fans too." The promos were created by GSD&M, which is the agency that created the PGA TOUR's "These Guys are Good" campaign
