  • July 9, 2003
NextNext Entertainment of New York and Rapid Blue of South Africa announced Wednesday that they will launch a weekly television series to link young people around the world via digital conferencing technology. Chat the Planet will premiere July 16 on WorldLink TV. The series is designed to connect young people from around the world, giving them an opportunity to communicate and share perspectives and opinions on issues from war to pop culture. Chat the Planet is funded in part by the Sheirah Foundation, founded by Barney creator Sheryl Leach and Howard Rosenfeld.

"Now more than ever, it is essential that American youth engage in honest conversations with their global counterparts. This type of programming breaks down barriers and builds tolerance," said Laurie Meadoff, president of NextNext Entertainment and one of Chat the Planet's executive producers. The six episodes of Chat the Planet will feature youth from South Africa, Jordan, Australia and the United States. Launching the series will be a link between Iraqi and American youth, filmed one week before the war and again a week after the war ended. In addition to airing on WorldLink TV, Chat the Planet will also air internationally on Fly TV and ABC in Australia, on several stations in the Middle East and on SABC in South Africa. WorldLink TV is available in more than 20 million U.S. households receiving satellite television, including DirecTV and EchoStar's DISH Network.
