More Airlines Charging For Bags

  • June 13, 2008
American Airlines has gotten razzed for its $15 bag-check fee, a result of astronomic fuel prices. Now it can share tomatoes with United Airlines--which, like Delta, will start charging for checked bags.

The service fee to check one bag for domestic travel will be $15 each way and the fee to check three or more bags, overweight bags or items that require special handling will increase from $100 to $125 or from $200 to $250, depending on the item.

The changes apply starting with June 13 ticket purchases for travel within the U.S. and Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on or after Aug. 18. The fee to check a second bag is $25 each way.

Southwest Airlines, meanwhile, has made hay of the programs with its "Fees Don't Fly With Us" campaign, launched when American announced its fee plan.
