Surpise! XFL Won't Last

  • April 20, 2001
Surprise! NBC is most likely going to drop the XFL after just one season. XFL president Basil DeVito admitted, "The future [of the XFL] on NBC is undecided." Adam Ware, UPN's chief operating officer, also noted that the league's future on his channel is in doubt, saying, "As you look toward next year, it becomes even harder to do because you're going back to the same category of advertisers and have to convince them to come back. The damage done by the negative press and by the problems NBC affiliates had may be too much at the end of the day to say that a second season is going to happen." Devito added, "The biggest mistake was starting too quickly. In Week 1, we were not prepared either from a football or television production side. Following the season we will be moving forward with what the new shape of the XFL will be. We have to improve it. We need to generate higher ratings. We need better play on the field." Regardless, DeVito and Vince McMahon insist the league isn't going away.
