Review: Google Search Wasn't Broken...

Really, Google, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As Michael Arrington says, messing with Google search -- the company's cash cow -- "is serious stuff." It's a strange decision, especially since Google has grown both its search and advertising share this year. So why, Arrington asks, is Google messing with a good thing?

In their blog post, Google says the new features are all about improving the search experience and giving people tools to make search even more useful to them. The tools certainly make Google Search more interactive. In fact, Arrington notes that Google has basically copied Wikia Search's most prominent features.

And while voting results up and down and posting comments may seem like fun new features, Arrington complains that, "this new stuff is a mess of arrows and troll comments and stuff moving around the page. That doesn't make my search experience more useful. It makes it move to another search engine."

Google claims that the changes you make only affect your search experience, but Arrington says this is probably only half true. Google most likely made the changes to see what kind of data they get, and whether that improves the quality of search results.
