Izzy Gould Named 'Daily Memphian' Chief Content Officer

The Daily Memphian, a large nonprofit newsroom with 40 staffers plus freelancers, has named journalist Izzy Gould as its chief content officer, a newly created position.

Gould will oversee Daily Memphian’s journalism and play a large role in revenue strategy and execution. He will work closely with Eric Barnes, CEO of the Daily Memphian, and the board of Memphis Fourth Estate Inc., the 501c3 nonprofit that owns the property.

Previously, Guild was senior director of content for Advance Local’s AL.com, which covers Alabama. Gould has also worked for Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Tribune, Morning News of Northwest Arkansas, USA Today and New Orleans' Times-Picayune.

“We are excited for Izzy to help build on our mission of serving readers through broad coverage of the news and issues facing our community,” says Andy Cates, chairman of the board of Memphis Fourth Estate. “Since we launched in 2018, The Daily Memphian has become a leader in this space.”

Founded five years ago, Daily Memphian combines philanthropic support and paid subscriptions, and offers free access to readers for whom the subscription cost is a barrier.

It reports that 70% of expenses were covered by philanthropy at launch; today, 70% is derived from operating revenue.

“The newsroom has established itself as the go-to source for information in the Memphis region, and I see many opportunities to build on the great reputation the team at The Daily Memphian has established,” Gould says.
