Fewer Consumers Say Ads Accurately Represent Black People

The portion of U.S. consumers who say advertising accurately represents Black people has steadily declined in the past few years. According to a survey by advertising agency Dentsu, it fell from 74% in 2021 to 70% this year.

“While many Black Americans say they see ads with Black people in them, fewer do than last year,” according to Dentsu. “Additionally, Black respondents are more likely than [the general population] to say representation in ads tends to be negative. Marketers must be conscious of not only having a diverse cast but showing a diversity of stories that bring to life the richness of Black lives.”
