Audio/Radio: Radio Sawa App by Radio Sawa for Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc.

At its core, this 24/7 music app for Arabic youth in the Middle East and North Africa brings together the energy of youth in the region. Chatty and easy to access, it offers up tech, sports, and pop culture – yet also allows interaction between listeners. How does it allow interaction in a part of the world where many of the governments are repressive? It goes around the governments’ FM broadcast control. The program solicits and then shares the voices and opinions that otherwise would not be heard but that need to be heard. Built on an IOS 6+ and Android 4+, it is a gorgeously contracted app and a necessary one.

Wouldn’t life be that much more interesting and so much more fulfilling if you had your own personal soundtrack? Enter a room and – Boom! – the soundtrack of your life starts playing (well, the soundtrack of your day, anyway). Modern Climate has developed that soundtrack and it’s called Human Mixtape. Download the app, select an entrance track from your personal library, and when you pass through an iBeacon hotspot or anywhere a Human Mixtape is installed, the world hears what you hear and sees you as you want to be seen – living life to your own personal soundtrack. Let the self-aggrandizement begin.

Frozen, the highest grossing film of all time, really should have its own app. Voila! Now it does. And what’s particularly sweet is that, not only are clips from the movie included and not only are all nine original songs included, it also includes a wonderful feature where you can mute the professional voices and substitute your own. (Try it at home alone first. Know your limitations). And, because there’s nothing quite as annoying as pretending to sing along to songs you don’t know, the app – which can be used with AirPlay – comes with lyrics to each song. So even when you’re off pitch, you won’t be off script.

Weather: Sunnycomb by Fueled for Weathernews Inc.

Weather apps largely boast the same features and functionality: current conditions, alerts, longer-term forecasts and the like. Thus Sunnycomb feels both novel and a little bit quirky at the same time. While it offers all the usual weather-app standbys, it also attempts to make weather personal. Owing to a well-nurtured community, Sunnycomb boasts an abundance of user-submitted photos as well as shared, decidedly non-scientific information about weather conditions and patterns wherever its users happen to find themselves.

Yahoo Weather isn’t the go-to weather gauge on users’ smart phones the way it is on many of their desktops. That said, it’s well worth going out of one’s way to access, owing to perhaps the most elegantly designed and immersive experience of all the weather apps. Current weather conditions are back-dropped by user-generated Flickr photos, rather than standard graphics. The message: while a depiction of snow cascading from the sky does a fine job of announcing that, indeed, it is snowing outside, that’s not the only way to graphically convey the information.

Wildcard: Shuffle by Media Group of America for Shuffle

Throw Tinder, CNN, and Gawker into a blender and Shuffle is what pours out. Shuffle is an app that changes the way readers consume and share the news. The app delivers important news stories in a clear and easy-to-use format and caters the stories to the reader’s interests using Shuffle algorithm. Stories are displayed like a deck of cards where swiping left will throw it away, tapping will lead you directly to the story, and swiping right will save the story to the user’s reading list. Shuffle remembers the direction of swipes and refines what news stories come up.
