Insights on An Upended Upfront

For a decade, MediaPost has annually gathered the buyers behind the billions to provide insights on the year's Upfront and a look into the future. But never before have both near-term and long-range pictures been murkier and never has there been any greater need for gaining clarity. Virtualized Upfronts, slashed budgets and  foggy forecasting leave the media-scape adrift in uncharted waters. It has never been more important to share insights and expectations. Over breakfast and two panel discussions, the most influential buyers in the business will discuss how they have responded to radically changed market conditions and will hopefully chart the rebound path for the media, marketing and advertising industries.

Upfront 2020-2021
After decades of predicting the deathknell of television's advanced advertising sales season ... could the upfront actually be dying due to a pandemic? In the months leading up to this year’s upfront negotiating season every network had canceled their live events in favor of “virtual” ones and advertisers were already beginning to slash short-term budgets, driving TV advertising prices down amid a record supply of stuck-at-home viewers glued to their screens for news about COVID-19. As we plan this year’s discussion -- itself bumped back two months due to America’s shutdown -- eyes were focused on how advertisers might exercise their upfront cancellation options from last year, and what all of this bodes for 2020-21.

Upfront 2025-2026

If there ever was going to be a long-term reset for Madison Avenue’s annual buying marketplace, the conditions heading into this year’s Outfront Forum have all the earmarks for one. Will the unprecented shutdown of businesses and communities, and the economic downturn triggered by it, be a fundamental shift for the ad industry ... or will Madison Avenue’s frenetic annual upfront markets return to normal when American society returns to normal? These and other fundamental questions about the underlying change of media market dynamics will be explored by a panel of some of the biggest media buyers in the world, who will look beyond the next few years to predict what the ad world will look like in 2025-26.
