After decades of predicting the deathknell of television's advanced advertising sales season ... could the upfront actually be dying due to a pandemic? In the months leading up to this year’s upfront negotiating season every network had canceled their live events in favor of “virtual” ones and advertisers were already beginning to slash short-term budgets, driving TV advertising prices down amid a record supply of stuck-at-home viewers glued to their screens for news about COVID-19. As we plan this year’s discussion -- itself bumped back two months due to America’s shutdown -- eyes were focused on how advertisers might exercise their upfront cancellation options from last year, and what all of this bodes for 2020-21.
