Mozilla Preps Tablet Browser
Putting other mobile Web browsers on notice, Mozilla Firefox is preparing to leave its mark on the tablet market. "We wanted to make something entirely new,” Firefox product designer Alex Limi said late last week regarding Mozilla’s prototype iPad browser, Junior. “We wanted to look into how we could reinvent the browser for a new form factor.”
What’s wrong with Apple’s Safari browser for the iPad? It’s a "a miserable experience" -- even though it remains the best option available in terms of tablet-based browsing -- according to Limi. As The Verge reminds us, “When it comes to browsing the Web on iOS, there are plenty of third-party alternatives to Apple's Safari.” Indeed, “Atomic, Dolphin, Mercury, Opera Mini, and Skyfire are just a few that have enjoyed some measure of success on the platform.”
To date, Mozilla’s sole offering has been an iPhone-only app that syncs tabs from a PC or Mac to users’ handsets -- assuming Firefox is their home browser of choice. When will Junior go mainstream? Well, The Verge doesn’t expect Mozilla to ship it in the immediate future. “The browser is still missing some fundamentals (e.g. a progress indicator) and its developers continue to debate what features to implement.”
