Vincent Wehren tells us how to verify that a bot crawling a Web site is really from Bing. He explains the steps to take, such as performing a reverse DNS lookup using the IP address from the logs to verify that it resolves to a name that ends with search.msn.com. Then do a forward DNS lookup using the name to confirm that it sends the information back to the same IP address. Wehren provides screen shots and code to help identify the process, along with tips on what not to do.
