After readers criticized it for publishing a photo of a dead 3-year-old refugee on a beach in Turkey, Germany’s leading tabloid, Bild, published a print edition on Tuesday with all pictures removed to emphasize the importance of visual images in reporting and understanding the news. The decision was especially noteworthy for a tabloid whose name means “picture” in German. In a note to readers titled, “Why we have to force ourselves to look,” the editors explained that upsetting images are necessary to help raise awareness: “Through them, we are being warned that each and every civilisation can collapse within an instance, that people open the doors to hell if we look away. This freedom is invaluable for rich societies such as ours.”
