'Maxim' Names Ragone Publisher

Maximmagazine has named Dan Ragone publisher and group media president, replacing former publisher Kevin Martinez.

Previously, Ragone served as president and publisher of Interview. Prior to that, he worked at Hearst as Elle’s vice president and managing director and Elle Décor’s publisher.

Ragone will report to Maxim owner Sardar Biglari, who recently added editor in chief to his title. Ragone will also report to special creative adviser Gilles Bensimon.

Maxim has rapidly transformed as an aspirational and inspirational brand,”  Biglari said in a statement.

According to WWD, Maxim has been in the process of transforming its brand for the last two years or so.

Last year, the magazine got two major redesigns, as well as a reshuffling of the management team. Former publisher Martinez was lured to Maxim from Condé Nast’s Details, before he was let go in in January after just two years at the company.

Biglari hired Kate Lanphear from The New York Times T Magazine in early 2014 to bring a less male-dominated and more fashion-focused approach to the magazine. However, her softer vision did not seem to click and she was let go last October, only seven months after her redesigned March issue hit newsstands, according to the New York Post.

Biglari has since crowned himself editor in chief and appointed Glenn O’Brien to be the editor-at-large.
