'SB Nation,' 'Climbing' Get New Editors, Finn Exits 'Barrons'

SB Nation and Climbing have hired new editor-in-chiefs, while longtime editor of Barron’s has stepped down.

Elena Bergeron will serve as the first editor-in-chief of Vox Media’s sports site SB Nation. Previously,  she was SB Nation's executive editor. Kevin Lockland, formerly VP of editorial, will focus on the business side of the site as general manager.

Bergeron told Poynter that SB Nation aims to grow by producing more video natively on social platforms and hire new talent.

Separately, Matt Samet has been named editor of Climbing, one of the marquis brands in AIM’s Outdoor Group. Samet has been contributing to Climbing since 1996 and served as its editor-in-chief from 2007 through 2010.

He replaces Julie Ellison, who will continue to serve as editor-at-large and contribute to Climbing’s print, online and educational efforts.

On the business magazine front, Ed Finn is leaving financial magazine Barron’s after 24 years. He has served as editor of Barron’s for the past 22 years and president for the past 19. Finn was responsible for launching Barrons.com in 1995, six months after he was named editor.

Jack Otter, editor of Barron’s Digital, will serve as interim editor for Barron’s, according to a memo sent Friday by Almar Latour, publisher and executive vice president of the Dow Jones Media Group.

“The mark of a great leader is they leave a business in better shape than they found it,” stated News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch. “Barron’s today is more robust editorially and commercially than it’s been over the course of its illustrious 96-year history, and that’s a reflection of Ed’s leadership.”
