ACLU Fights Demand For Facebook Data About Pipeline Protest Page

The American Civil Liberties Union is seeking to quash a request by police in Bellingham, Washington to obtain Facebook data as part of an investigation into the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. The police have obtained a warrant for account information about anyone who has interacted with the page of the Bellingham #NoDAPL Coalition, which is protesting the pipeline. “The warrant at issue here is deeply problematic and runs afoul of constitutional protections,” attorney La Rond Baker stated. “Political speech and the freedom to engage in political activity without being subjected to undue government scrutiny are at the heart of the First Amendment."
