Rabbit Is Back

Avid Playboy readers know that the bunny is hidden on the magazine’s cover each month. In a unique collaboration with Volkswagen, the September issue had a rabbit hidden on both the front and back cover, the latter in an ad marking the return of the Volkswagen Rabbit.

“The goal was to rebrand the Rabbit and play off the Playboy icon, the rabbit head,” says Lou Mohn, publisher of Playboy.

The front cover featured Hugh Hefner’s three girlfriends promoting the new season of their reality TV show, “The Girls Next Door.” Flip the mag over and there was a rear-view image of the same picture, complete with a tattoo of VW Rabbit emblem on the small of Holly’s back. The copy even appears backwards on the back cover: “The Volkswagen Rabbit. It’s Back.”

In real life, Holly sports a tattoo of the Playboy bunny, but VW’s agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, worked its digital magic and swapped the bunny for the rabbit.
