For Undergrads Only

Facebook, long the domain of college students, recently decided to open its social networking site to the Web, allowing anyone who goes online to join.

But now that the site has shed its exclusivity, another company has stepped into the void to launch a social network just for collegians. The company, College.com, launched in early September and will only accept members with working educational e-mail addresses. Founder Jon Davidman created several features aimed at the nuts and bolts of school life: areas for sororities and fraternities, professor ratings, collaborative tools for class notes and labs, classified sections and even a nifty automated wake-up call service.

EarthQuake Media, the New York agency of record for the site, said the company hopes to appeal to marketers aiming specifically for students. “Keeping College.com super-targeted at college kids ... is going to create better inventory for advertisers,” says Robert Davidman, EarthQuake’s CEO.
