Tips For Scoring .Edu Links

Snagging an inbound link from a .edu site can often be quite a coup for a Webmaster, as educational sites are often large and complex enough to be trusted by the search engines, pass link juice (authority and possibly PageRank), and expose the linked-to site to hundreds if not thousands of potential visitors. Even so, the Vertical Measures team notes that .edu links all have varying degrees of worth and that they aren't nearly as valuable if you have to pay for them. So they brainstormed some ideas for getting a .edu link free of charge, starting with creating a "Top" list that relates in some way to your product. A site selling dental products for example, could host a list of the "Top 20 Dental Schools"--enticing said schools to want to brag about being ranked so highly (and linking to the site that nominated them).

You can also do reviews of books related to your products or services that professors have written, or ask a professor to be a source for an article or blog post--in both cases, they'll likely link back to you (thereby gaining exposure for themselves) from their own site.

For sports or community-focused sites, try posting your local college's sports scores, spotlights on student athletes, and info on upcoming competitions or events.
