  • KEVIN COYNE, EVP and Director of Media and New Technologies at Bates, has left the agency after eight years. Coyne's departure comes as Bates Media is folded into Optimedia. That process, which began during the upfront market when Bates Media teamed up with Optimedia, is expected to be complete by late fourth quarter or early 2003.

  • ED MORRIS has been hired as the first CFO for interactive marketing agency Sharpe Partners. Morris is a veteran of a number of financial and advertising firms, including Citicorp, Young & Rubicam, and Castor Advertising, where he was vice president and CFO until 2000. He is the 21st hire for the New York-based Sharpe Partners.

  • A top Verizon Communications executive for brand management and marketing is leaving her post with the telecommunications company to join financial services firm Charles Schwab as is chief marketing officer. JODY BILNEY, senior vice president for brand management and marketing communications at Verizon, will join Schwab in mid-July and will direct strategy for all of the company's brand, marketing and corporate communications activities.

  • HOWARD C. KIM, has been named Director of Marketing and strategic planning for DVD.com. Kim is a seasoned online marketing and advertising professional, most notably recognized as a one of the leading online media consultants in Youth targeted marketing.

  • JENNIFER PALMER has joined Outside magazine as New England accounts manager. Palmer was formerly New England sales manager for Men’s Journal and Rolling Stone. She will head up the Boston sales office and report to Eric Zinczenko, Eastern ad director.

  • Worth magazine has named new advertising and marketing directors. DOUGLAS DAURY has been promoted to national advertising director from account manager for luxury automotive and financial categories. ALISON DE GROOT has been named marketing director. She comes to Worth from advertising and marketing positions at Backpacker magazine. SUSAN JACOBS has joined the title as account executive for travel and financial categories. Jacobs had been advertising manager at Newsweek since 1976. BRIAN KNOWLES has been named account manager for financial and liquor categories. He comes to Worth from the position of New England advertising manager for the magazines Registered Rep. and Trusts & Estates.

  • Dow Jones & Co. named RICHARD F. ZANNINO chief operating officer and KAREN ELLIOT HOUSE senior vice president and publisher of all print editions of The Wall Street Journal. Zannino had been chief financial officer. House was previously president of the company's international group. Peter R. Kann, who had been the Journal's publisher since 1989, remains chairman and chief executive. Kann, who is married to House, will continue as editorial director of all Dow Jones publications.

  • KURT SCHRAMM has been named Senior Vice President of Media and Technology Sales at Endai Worldwide. Schramm comes to the New York based media and technology company from CMGI and Ziff-Davis.

  • DEBORAH STEINER has joined Bridal Guide as travel advertising manager. Steiner was previously advertising manager for Garden Design and Saveur magazines and has worked at Conde Nast Traveler, among other titles.

  • THOMAS HUBER has returned to Smithsonian magazine as associate publisher after two years as worldwide advertising director with the Harvard Business Review. Huber was a mid-Atlantic manager for Smithsonian from 1997 to 2000.

  • TOM SHEEHY has been promoted from local sales manager to vp and general sales manager for Fox Television's LA stations KTTV and KCOP. He will report to Stuary Evans, vp and director of sales for the stations. Sheehy replaces Bob McCauley, who left to join Adlink.

  • MELINDA HAGE has been named the new senior vice president of current programs for Warner Bros. Television. She was promoted from vice president of current programs, and will continue to oversee creative details for WB-produced TV series.

  • The Florida Division of American Lawyer Media, Inc., a legal journalism and information company, today announced that LES HABER will join the division as the Display/Law Firm Marketing Sales Manager. In his new position, Haber will be responsible for developing strong relationships with advertisers and increasing the current advertising client base. He will report directly to the President of the Division, Chris Mobley. Haber has 30 years of advertising sales and management experience, most recently at Clear Channel Communications where he was the general sales manager in Miami.

  • Modem Media said Thursday that it is closing three offices and cutting 90 staffers to align resources with a downgraded revenue outlook for 2002. The layoffs will hit 23% of i-shop's 400-person global workforce, though most will stem from its Toronto, Munich and Hong Kong operations, which are due to shut down by the end of the third quarter. The company is also reducing office space at its Norwalk, CT, headquarters and in London.

  • MARIAN MCEVOY, editor in chief of Hearst Magazines' House Beautiful, has stepped down after two years at the shelter monthly. McEvoy will be replaced by Mark Mayfield, who will leave his post as editor in chief of Meredith Corp.'s Traditional Home. Mayfield will join House Beautiful on July 15. Previously, Mayfield worked at Time Inc.'s Southern Progress Corp. for six years, moving up the ranks to become editor and vice president from 1997-2001.

  • PHYLLIS GRANN is leaving her position as vice chairwoman of Random House after six months, complaining of boredom with her job. Her departure follows her resignation last fall as chief executive of Penguin Putnam and extends a drama that has captivated publishing as Grann seeks a fitting role to extend her illustrious career. Grann, who is over 60, may continue to work for Random House, a unit of Bertelsmann, as a consultant, but her friends said they expected her work for the company to be minimal after her unhappy tenure there. Grann is expected to move into an office in the private equity firm of Leeds, Weld & Company, which recently hired Jonathan Newcomb, former chief executive of Simon & Schuster; the firm sometimes invests in publishing.

  • UNreal Marketing Solutions, Inc. just hired KIRSTEN THOMPSON as Media Manager. Thompson previously worked at AutoTrader.com as an Internet Consultant and as a Senior Media Planner Buyer at Earle Palmer Brown.

  • KIM WOODS has been appointed director/Western region ad sales for AMC Networks, where she will oversee the west coast office for national sales for AMC and Women's Entertainment. Woods will report to Liz Koman, svp/AMC Networks.

  • GREG HAMMAREN has been tapped to run Fox Sports Net Detroit as vice president and general manager. Hammaren has spent the last twelve years in sales at Fox Sports Net South in Atlanta. He will replace interim general manager HUNTER NICKELL, who stays on board as senior VP of Fox Sports Net.

  • MGM Distribution Co. said it has appointed PETER ADEE as president of worldwide marketing, following the resignation of Bob Levin. Adee was most recently president of worldwide marketing for Vivendi Universal's Universal Pictures. He left the company in May after Adam Fogelson moved into that job.

  • JOSHUA M. KRUTER has been promoted to marketing director, technology category and communication strategies at Forbes. Kruter was previously senior marketing manager, technology category, where he oversaw the marketing of initiatives to tech advertisers and the company's media website.
