Media Diary John Capone

Managing Editor, Media magazine

6:00-6:15 a.m. Wake up to WNYC-FM, the NPR affiliate in New York, on the alarm. Wish they would go back to playing "Morning Edition" at this hour, or the BBC, or anything besides "The Takeaway."

6:25-6:35 a.m. Read The Approval Matrix on the back page of New York magazine and find a new idea to rip off (NPR still on in the background).

7-7:30 a.m. Running on elliptical trainer at the gym. ABC-TV, CNN and ESPN are on the flat screens hanging from the ceiling, but not really paying attention to them, because I am listening to iPod trying to determine which band is better to run to: Jesus Lizard, Jane's Addiction, Wolf Parade or Sleater Kinney. Surprisingly, find the answer is Sleater Kinney. Do, however, notice two commercials on the monitors. One is for a wood chipper and includes a lingering shot of the hand-danger warning decal near the blades - can't help but think of Fargo. The other is for Fancy Feast cat food, with a cat swatting at neon sea creatures and a floating butterfly - wonder who gave the cat acid.

7:45 a.m. See New York Times business section headlines on a paper a woman is reading while working out at the gym. She is holding the paper up and reading it while doing squats. Impressive multi-tasking.

8:45 a.m. Go to check phone for message from friend supposed to meet for coffee. It's dead.

9:00-9:20 a.m. Buy New York Post (neglected to steal neighbor's Times) and read sports section in Murray's Bagels with coffee. Sick of A-Rod story, but worried about Johan Santana's elbow.

9:25-9:45 a.m. Continue reading Post on subway.

9:50 a.m. Finally get to desk and open work MacMail and personal Gmail (through iGoogle with various requisite RSS feeds and blog searches), all of which remain open until 7:15 p.m.

9:50-10:30 a.m. Reading and responding to morning emails.

10:30 a.m. Quickpost to thebutcherblog.com about the Burger Beanie, a hat that looks like a hamburger.

10:45 a.m. Read news from various online sources from feeds on iGoogle page, including nytimes.com, thedailybeast.com, The New York Observer, The Hardball Times, Black Book magazine, nbcnewyork.com and newser.com.

11 a.m. Read opinion piece about Rush Limbaugh written by David Plouffe in the Washington Post after being emailed the link.

12:00 p.m. Update Twitter @iamjacobhorner via Web.

1 p.m. Visit nytimes.com; listen to audio of Frank Bruni in conversation about the new restaurant L'Artusi, with accompanying slide show of the food and dining room.

1:30 p.m. Quickpost item to thebutcherblog.com about the guys who created the Bacon Explosion getting a six-figure book deal.

3:30-5 p.m. Check various blogs and Web sites, including those still open from the morning such as nytimes.com.

6:30 p.m. Get directions from freewilliamsburg.com to Maracuja where the end of Bearduary party is being held. Also check bearduary.com for updates.

7:50 p.m. Walk past wall full of wild postings on way to the subway.

8:45 p.m. See ads on digital jukebox at Maracuja - strangely, the cover of a Jodeci album continually pops up on the screen.

9:30 p.m. Get photograph taken of my face next to a small Asian girl's tattooed derrière for a forthcoming coffee table book from Vice magazine. The tattoo reads "I heart Beards," except the heart is the shape of a heart and the beards is the shape of a beard.

12:50 a.m. Immediately turn off "Taxi-TV" screen in cab on the way home.
