Tax Ads Misleading

  • March 19, 2001
The New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) is having a problem with H & R Block's current advertising campaign regarding the filing of complex tax returns. NYSSCPA president, P. Gerard Sokolski, believes that the ads are misleading and detrimental to consumers, saying they claim that they prepare more complex tax returns than any CPA firm in America. H&R Block Assistant VP Steven A. Christianson said their definition of complex for the ads was individual returns with schedules. He then added that there is a qualification that makes it clear that H& R Block does not allege to prepare tax returns that are more complex than those prepared by CPA firms.
