Coke Testing Vio Fizzy Milk In Four 'Natural' Fruit Flavors

Coca-Cola has begun test-marketing a drink called Vio that contains skimmed milk mixed with sparking water flavored with fruit, Maurice Chittenden reports. There are four "natural" flavors - peach mango, berry, citrus and tropical colada - but the concoction also contains 26 grams of sugar a bottle, which may put a damper on health claims.

Available at natural food stores and delis in New York, Vio comes in an 8-ounce "aluminum bottle" and does not require refrigeration. Someone says it tastes "like a birthday party for a polar bear," but admittedly that someone is a copywriter.

The drink is part of a wider Coke initiative called Project Life to develop milk-based products, and it could be marketed globally if it's successful in the U.S., a prospect that British dairy farmers find lovely. "If Coca-Cola wants to market fizzy milk and give us the odd shilling, we would be very happy," says David Cotton, vice-chairman of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers.
