News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch has promised to begin charging for access to the company's online news sites. Long Island-based
Newsday could provide a gauge on customer uptake. The paper will
begin charging $5 a week for access to some of the paper's sites on Oct. 28, including sports. But home subscribers of the paper and those who have broadband service through Cablevision -- which owns
Newsday -- will continue to have access to the full site free. The paper said that approximately 75% of homes on Long Island currently have home delivery or the Cablevision Internet service.
