ESPN To Launch 3D Network

ESPN Innovation Lab

ESPN promises to launch a 3D network in time to carry the World Cup games this summer in South Africa. The company said it will use a Florida facility for 3D research going forward.

ESPN said tech companies will be able to use its "Innovation Lab" at the Orlando Disney complex to do product testing and look for other improvements in 3D TV. Also, a production center will allow broadcasts of events in 3D.

The site will "serve as a training facility for production personnel to gain experience in telecasting 3D events," ESPN said. The "Lab" launched last fall.

ESPN 3D network is set to carry 85 live events in its first year after a June 11 debut. Those include the BCS National Championship game in January, as well as NBA and college basketball games.
