Turner Pushes 'TV Everywhere' With 2 Dedicated Sites
The sites for TNT and TBS provide opportunities to view full episodes of "The Closer" and "Lopez Tonight" within 24 hours after broadcast on their respective networks.
The move indicates that there may be two "TV Everywhere" access points: sites run by cable, satellite and telco TV providers, and those operated by the participating networks. By debuting its own entry points, Turner could sell advertising, promote programming, etc. there.
That would mean added revenues, since networks might charge advertisers more if the same commercials are run on-air and online within episodes.
Turner has debuted the two sites along with Verizon FiOS. A "FiOS TV Online" site offers access to Turner programming -- as do tbs.com/ tveverywhere and tnt.tv/tveverywhere. Turner is likely to launch truTV and Cartoon Network sites soon.
On both the FiOS and Turner entry points, Verizon subscribers can key in a user ID and password to gain access. "TV Everywhere" is an initiative that requires a sign-in process to ensure online viewers also pay for TV at home. The move could cut down on the amount of programming cable networks make available free on the Web.
Turner, ironically, has been aggressive at offering access to shows on its Web sites gratis, from "The Closer" to "Seinfeld." And episodes of both are still available to all comers.
The "TV Everywhere" sites for TNT and TBS set up in partnership with Verizon are likely to be synced with other operators going forward.
