The Emmy Awards could be up for some stiff competition soon. A small faction of TV execs are quietly moving ahead with plans for a rival TV awards show to be sponsored by the Paley Center for Media.
Chaired by Sony Pictures TV president Steve Mosko, Fox Networks Group CEO Tony Vinciquerra and Lippin Group chairman Dick Lippin, the execs are eyeing a 2012 launch date for the awards ceremony,
reports
Variety. It would be held mid-May, before the Emmys.
To make the Paley Center awards a more palatable alternative to the Emmys, the committee is said to be considering
the idea of opening some voting up to the general public, enabling popular series more opportunity to win awards. They're looking for ways to get broadcast shows - lately pushed aside by the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences in favor of cable fare like "Mad Men" - more attention.
