Wal-Mart Stores is ditching its plans to build a Walmart Superstore near the Wilderness Battlefield, a Civil War site in Virginia, reports Chain Store Age. The trade publication says lawyers for the
Bentonville, Ark.-based retailers made the announcement in a northern Virginia court, where a judge has been hearing a case to block construction. Preservationists and historians say "the new store
would infringe on the site of a key May 1864 battle where historians say the Civil War began to turn in favor of the North," it says.
