NBC series Crime & Punishment's second season has helped increase visibility for a weekly featured 800 number, which following the June 15 episode increased calls to the National Sexual Assault
Hotline by 677%. The episode, People v. Smith, focused on San Diego Deputy District Attorney Tracy Prior's prosecution of a a man who was accused and convicted of 19 counts of childhood molestation.
"Crime & Punishment" is created by Dick Wolf, architect of the hugely successful "Law & Order" franchise, Oscar and Emmy winning documentarian Bill Guttentag and producer David Kanter. The series,
which does not use actors, scripts or re-enactments, chronicles the real life cases prosecuted by the San Diego County District Attorney's office and airs Sundays, 10:00 p.m. on NBC. In the episode
airing this Sunday, June 22, DDA John Philpott prosecutes a young man arrested for a DUI murder. Following that episode, the number for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 1-800-GET-MADD, will be shown.
