VH1 Boosts HIV/AIDS Awareness with Campaign

  • June 20, 2003
VH1 will reveal the first phase of its first-ever comprehensive HIV/AIDS awareness campaign today which is timed to promote and support National HIV Testing Day on Friday, June 27. In a twist on the testing concept, VH1 will post an online survey on VH1.com that will "test" people's attitudes and knowledge today about the virus. VH1 will also air the first of the network's new series of public service announcements (PSAs). VH1's outreach is part of Viacom's current global media campaign KNOW HIV/AIDS which is focused on encouraging people to get tested for HIV and increasing their overall awareness about the epidemic. As with the Viacom campaign, VH1's efforts are being developed with the help of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, a leader in health information research. "Our viewers grew up being warned about the dangers of HIV. But now that they've gone on to careers and started families, HIV awareness has taken a backseat to other issues that face them today, said Christina Norman, VH1 General Manager. "But AIDS is still an epidemic that affects them and their families either directly or indirectly. Awareness and prevention are the most powerful tools against HIV and our viewers and their own efforts are essential in successfully helping to stop its spread." The network's first awareness PSA "10 Reasons You Should Get Tested for HIV" is a 30-second spot developed by the VH1 on-air creative team that provides an irreverent checklist of reasons.
