Small Newspapers Erect Pay Walls

In more than 300 phone interviews with publishers of daily U.S. newspapers, 46% of publishers of daily newspapers under 25,000 circulation now require payment for at least some of their online content. Among newspapers with greater than 25,000 circulation, 24% now charge. The survey was based on a random sample of all 1,390 U.S. dailies, and 301 interviews were conducted April 1-18 by the Missouri School of Journalism's Center for Advanced Social Research. The response rate was 78%.

And they think selling hardcopy newspapers was hurting their bottom line?
The industry is completely missing the boat in transitioning to a world where eMedia is king. What they need to recognize is that it is their BRAND that has the potential to make money!
The ONLY thing that they need to do is require registration to access the information that they gather and so long as their content is relevant they will grow...
It's COMMUNITY stupid! Community is what will garner advertisers....
