San Diego Blackout Cancels Nielsen Ratings

  • September 9, 2011
The blackout that affected 1.4 million homes in the San Diego region Thursday wreaked havoc on the local TV business, with Nielsen saying there would be no ratings issued for the night. Nielsen investigated the power outage's impact on TV viewing in other DMAs, but didn't find it was substantive enough to alter a ratings report. The blackout began about 3:30 p.m. local time and ended about 12 hours later, depriving residents of the NFL season opener on NBC. --David Goetzl
