It's a slow news day, which gives us time to read a series of pieces examining just how far women have come in the media world since Ms. magazine was founded a little over 40 years ago.
(And click here for an excellent oral history of that historic publication, which ran last year in New York magazine.)
So, baby, how far have we come? Not far enough, apparently. "Lately, there has been a flurry of data showing that major media outlets still overwhelmingly cite men as experts, even on
women’s issues such as reproductive rights: A media watchdog called 4th Estate says, for example, that in
six months of election coverage by major print and broadcast outlets, 81 percent of those quoted about abortion were men," writes Cyndi Stivers.
Crappy statistic, but on the other side of
the equation, Stivers also interviews Lynn Povich, who participated in the historic Newsweek sex discrimination suit. There are also salutes to 40 pioneers who changed the business, as well as profiles of 20 up-and-coming women to watch.
