Coca-Cola Accelerates Plant-Based Packaging
The Coca-Cola Company has partnered with JBF Industries Ltd. to expand production of the plant-based material used in its PlantBottle packaging.
The PlantBottle package, the first recyclable PET plastic bottle made partially from plants, was introduced in 2009. Coca-Cola has set a goal of using PlantBottle technology in all of its plastic bottles by 2020.
JBF will build the world’s largest facility to produce bio-glycol, the key ingredient used in PlantBottle packaging, according to Coca-Cola. The facility, to be located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, will produce the ingredient using locally-sourced sugar cane and sugar cane processing waste.
Currently, PlantBottle packaging is available in more than 24 countries, across numerous Coca-Cola products.
C-C says the packaging has eliminated the equivalent of almost 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions or 200,000 barrels of oil since its introduction. --Karlene Lukovitz
