St. Patrick's Day Spending to Reach $4.7 Billion

  • March 5, 2013

The National Retail Federation says more than 133 million people will flaunt their Irish side this St. Patrick’s Day, spending $4.7 billion to do so. On a per-leprechaun basis, that works out to roughly $35.27, the NRF says, including attire, décor, food and drink. This year, with Easter falling only two weeks behind St. Patty’s Day, shoppers may be looking to score deals for both holidays at once.

The survey, conducted by BIGInsights and based on more than 5,000 adults, finds that 84.2% of the celebrants will wear green, 34.6% will make a special dinner, and 23.3% will decorate their home or office. Additionally, 27.4% will go to a party at a bar or restaurant, and 19.5% will attend a private party.
