Lakers Broadcasts Continue Korean Option

Time Warner Cable’s regional sports network carrying Los Angeles Lakers games will continue to air them in Korean via secondary audio programming throughout the playoffs. The network has offered the option since late last year, when it launched, which was believed to be the first time in the U.S. for an RSN.

Games 2-4 will be on the network, as well as games 5-7, if necessary.

The network said its English-language coverage for the playoffs will include extended studio shows. This is the first time the network has offered playoff games.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet also said it would launch a new series, “Through the Lens,” about the team’s history on April 24, as captured on camera by team photographer Andy Bernstein. He has been with the team since 1982.

The RSN is available on major providers in its footprint and DirecTV, whose CEO expressed frustration at the cost of offering it. Dish Network continues to be a holdout.

The network has a Spanish-language companion. Last year, data showed that Southern California has the largest Korean population in the country with about 330,000. New York had the second-largest.
