AT&T Adds More U-Verse TV Subscribers

AT&T added more U-Verse TV customers in the second quarter than it did last year, as it passed the 5 million subscriber mark. The numbers come a week after Verizon reported its similar FiOS TV service also reached the 5 million level.

AT&T added 233,000 customers in the April-June period compared to 155,000 a year ago. It now has 9.4 million total U-verse customers, a figure that takes into account broadband subscribers.

U-verse total revenues, which include business operations, jumped 30.1% in 2Q.

Verizon was far faster out of the gate with its telco TV service, but AT&T seems to have found equal momentum. Verizon had the lesser 140,000 net additions in TV subscribers in the most recent quarter.

Verizon FiOS TV does have higher penetration at close to 35% than U-verse, which is at 20.1%.

U-verse has been embroiled in a standoff with NBCUniversal in Houston about whether to carry its regional sports network there. It likely will have to ink a deal before the Houston Rockets start their season this fall with new acquisition Dwight Howard.
