Yahoo! To Provide Traffic Updates

  • December 15, 2004
As part of an effort to expand local content, Internet portal company Yahoo! Wednesday night began offering Web surfers information about current traffic conditions for the largest U.S. metro areas. Accident reports and news about construction will be available for the 70 top metro areas, while additional information about the speed of traffic will be posted for the top 20 metro areas.

The raw data will come from government agencies and private companies that track such information via sensors embedded in roads, helicopter and police scanners, said Paul Levine, general manager, Yahoo! Local services. The information, which comes to Yahoo! in real time throughout the day, will be integrated in Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Local, and Yahoo! Maps, and is available at http://maps.yahoo.com.
