Big Bowl Numbers for ABC

  • January 5, 2001
(Broadcastingcable.com) - The bowl games scored strong ratings points for ABC this week, climaxing with last night's 27.2 million fans tuning in to see Oklahoma whip Florida State 13-2 in the Orange Bowl to take the non-mythical national collegiate football championship. The 17.8 rating, 28 share in Nielsen nationals topped the 17.5 rating for last year's championship showdown in the Sugar Bowl when Florida State topped Virginia Tech. ABC's Sugar Bowl drew 19.8 million viewers with a 13.0/21 for Miami's 37-20 mashing of Florida in the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday night. The mouse also made out on Washington's 34-24 victory over Purdue in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day: it drew 22.9 million viewers from a 14.0/24. And its primetime match-up on Monday, Oregon State's 41-9 thumping of Notre Dame in then Fiesta Bowl, drew 17.5 million viewers with a 10.7/18. Those Rose and Fiesta numbers were slightly down from what those games drew during last year's Bowl Day frenzy.
