Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Netflix, among others, have teamed up to build next-generation tools they collectively say will become available
royalty-free and open-source through the Alliance for Open Media. The initial project creates a new, open royalty-free video codec specification based on the contributions from
members, along with specifications for media format, and content encryption and adaptive streaming.
