Rodale To Shutter 'Running Times'

Health and fitness publisher Rodale is shuttering one of its smaller enthusiast titles, Running Times, the company announced on Friday. The bimonthly magazine will cease publication following its January-February issue, and subscribers will receive Runner’s World instead.

Acquired by Rodale in 2007, Running Times was a relatively niche publication targeting hardcore runners of the kind who aspire to not only finish marathons but actually win them, a fact reflected in its smaller circulation -- around 123,000, compared to 671,000 for Runner’s World.

Like other big publishers, Rodale has been reorganizing and consolidating its business to focus on core properties and revenue streams. Last month, it shut down Grow, its in-house custom content agency, following several years of lackluster business performance.

The closing of Running Times follows a number of other magazine closures by other publishers. Most recently, Conde Nast announced it would cease publication of Details, merging much of its editorial coverage with GQ, which will replace Details for subscribers.

Separately, Bauer shuttered the print editions of M and Twist magazines, although the brands live on online.

In October, Time Inc. revealed it was closing All You, targeting value-conscious shoppers, and earlier this year Meredith Corp. announced that it was closing Fitness, following its acquisition of Shape magazine. Lucky, the shopping magazine spun off by Conde Nast, and Nylon for Guys also both ceased publication this year.

Across the pond, Bauer closed the British editions of lad mags FHM and Zoo; publisher EMAP shuttered the American edition of FHM back in 2006.
