Dropbox Shutters Mailbox

Dropbox plans to shut down its email and photo-sharing applications Mailbox and Carousel, respectively, in 2016.

In news announced on the company’s blog on Monday, Dropbox stated that key features of Carousel would be transferred to the Dropbox app. “We’ll also be using what we’ve learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox,” state CEO Drew Houston and CTO Arash Ferdowsi.

Mailbox’s demise comes two years after the iOS mobile application first launched, when one million subscribers signed up to use the application before it had even come to market. It also marks two years since Dropbox acquired Orchestra, the company behind Mailbox, for a reported $100 million.

Since acquiring the company, however, Dropbox stalled Mailbox’s forward momentum. The company tested a Mac desktop version of the application but it never made it out of beta.

The reason for the application’s closure is partly due to Dropbox’s move away from consumer technology and its redirected focus toward B2B productivity software.

“Over the past few months, we’ve increased our team’s focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together,” state Houston and Ferdowsi.

This effort is likely inspired in order to compete with Dropbox’s wealthier competitor: Box.

Mailbox customers have until February 26, 2016, to find a new email mobile application.
