Ask Jeeves Buys Bloglines

  • February 8, 2005
In a move designed to capture a share of the growing number of Web users who read blogs and who use really simple syndication feeds, search engine Ask Jeeves acquired Bloglines, a company that aggregates and searches blogs, Ask Jeeves announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal, which closed Friday, were not disclosed.

For now, Ask Jeeves will maintain Bloglines as a separately branded site, said Daniel Read, vice president for product management at Ask Jeeves. Read said the company has no immediate plans to sell advertising on Bloglines, which launched in June 2003 and includes about 300 million indexed blog entries.

Bloglines CEO Mark Fletcher, and several other key Bloglines employees, will join Ask Jeeves, said Read. Fletcher's new title will be vice president, general manager Bloglines.
