'Quartz' To Open Chart Platform Atlas To Public

Quartz is opening up Atlas, its platform for creating charts, to the public. A project that started last year for Quartz’s journalists, Atlas can now be used by chart creators around the world.

But don’t get too excited yet.

While anyone can create an Atlas account now, only a few will get initial access.

More will be allowed to access the open platform as it evolves and improves, according to a statement from Zachary M. Seward, Quartz’s SVP of product and executive editor.

Atlas works as a sort of search engine for thousands of bar and line charts. It uses a charting tool that visualizes data in a mobile-friendly style. Every chart published on Atlas has its own page, which can be saved, shared or embedded. Users can also download the underlying data.

It will be open to everyone for viewing, embedding and downloading charts but the ability to create charts will only be available to a lucky few for now.

“Atlas is becoming an open platform because we think it has potential to become the world’s largest repository of user-generated charts and data. Imagine a network of people who work with data every day, sharing it all with each other and the rest of the world. That’s the vision we’re pursuing, and hope you’ll join us in getting there,” Seward stated.

Seward added that in the future,he hopes the project will be able to provide support for organizations that want to use Atlas for their charting needs.

He told Publishers Daily that these may be “ambitious” goals, but he believes they have “the right strategy to get there.”

The in-house tool that powers Atlas is called Chartbuilder, an open-source project. Seward called on developers to help contribute to the project, or to work in one of the many open positions at Atlas.

Atlas is sponsored by launch partner GE, a company that also has native ads in the form of charts on Atlas. Mia Mabanta, head of marketing and revenue products at Quartz, told PD that GE’s ads on Atlas are custom-themed sponsor charts. The first appears as the third chart on the homepage; the rest appear every 10th chart after that.

“As launch partner, GE has exclusive branding presence throughout theatlas.com and on Atlas charts embedded elsewhere, through 2016," Mabanta said.

Various brands are able to run sponsor charts on Atlas, while other sponsored content would appear on Atlas, she added.
