Students Elect Clinton In Newsela's Mock 2016 Election

What if Americans under the age of 18 could vote?

According to Newsela’s Student Vote 2016, Hillary Clinton would greatly benefit from younger voters.

By 57% to 32%, Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump when over 400,000 students across the country cast their ballots with Newsela. Over 16,000 schools participated, representing all 50 states.

The highest number of votes cast by students came from Chicago, IL, Portland, OR and San Jose, CA.

According to Newsela, younger voters overwhelmingly chose Hillary Clinton, while the high-school vote was much closer. Overall, Clinton won most swing states except for Ohio. She also won over traditionally Republican states of Texas, Georgia and South Carolina.

Based on school ethnicity, schools that are over 70% black or Hispanic overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton. The opposite was true for schools that are over 70% white, where Donald Trump came out on top.

Rural schools also preferred Trump, with the vote being relatively even in suburban schools. Clinton took the top spot among schools in urban areas.

Newsela also noted that more than 1 million students read an election-related article on their site, with an Associated Press article about the first presidential debate as the most-read.
