The American Journalism Project Grants $5.4 Million To Local Newsrooms

The American Journalism Project (AJP) has contributed $5.4 million to four nonprofit news organizations, the group announced last week.

The recipients include: Deep South Today ($2 million), Grist ($925,000), New York Focus ($1.5 million), and Spotlight Delaware ($1 million).

The AJP will also provide strategic support to the newsrooms to help them expand their reporting capacity.

“We are in the midst of a rebirth in local news across this country, driven by a new generation of local news innovators changing the way we sustain community journalism,” says Sarabeth Berman, CEO of the AJP. “Each of these organizations have compelling visions for journalism that strengthens their communities. We’re thrilled to partner with them to help them build enduring organizations.”

The group has committed $55.3 million to 44 grantees since its founding in 2019.
