Google Base Traffic Soars With $10 Promotion

Traffic to Google Checkout increased 38% in one day when Google added a $10 promotion on Monday, Jan. 15, according to Hitwise. To arrive at that percentage, the research firm tracked the market share of visits specifically to the payment page in Google Checkout--not the clicks on the home page link to Google Checkout. On Tuesday, Jan. 16, the biggest driver of traffic to Google Checkout--26.05%--was Google's own home page, which recently added Google Checkout with a promotion for customers to receive $10 from Google. Top retail sites--from Hitwise's shopping and classifieds category--sending traffic to Google Checkout were Toys 'R' Us (toysrus.com) contributing 8.3%; TextbooksRus.com supplying 4.35%; and MSN Hotmail providing 3.19% of traffic.
